La bioquímica argentina Raquel Chan, descubridora del gen HB-4 en girasol que permitió el desarrollo de cultivos transgénicos de soja y trigo tolerantes a la sequía, recibió el Premio Konex Platino 2023 en la categoría Ciencia y Tecnología, por sus contribuciones al campo de la biotecnología y su trayectoria durante la última década.
La fundación Konex subrayó que la labor de Chan «se ha centrado en comprender cómo las plantas responden a las condiciones ambientales desfavorables, con un enfoque especial en la sequía».
Entre sus logros más destacados se encuentra el descubrimiento del gen HaHB-4 en el girasol, que activa un mecanismo de respuesta de las plantas al estrés por la falta de agua. Este gen ha demostrado ser transferible a otras plantas, como el trigo y la soja, aumentando significativamente su tolerancia a la sequía», que fue desarrollado en conjunto con la empresa biotecnológica Bioceres.
«Este avance ha abierto nuevas posibilidades en la producción de alimentos en condiciones climáticas adversas», remarcaron en comunicado.
En su papel como Investigadora Superior de Conicet y Profesora Titular en la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Chan lideró un equipo de científicos en el Instituto de Agrobiotecnología del Litoral.
Chan completó una extensa educación en bioquímica, obteniendo su título de grado en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén y su doctorado en la Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina. Realizó estudios de postdoctorado en Estrasburgo, Francia.
